Our April club meeting was very well attended with vigorous discussion and opinionation. One of our extra enjoyable meetings. The “one minute forum” or “round robin” gives everyone a voice without any one person monopolizing the dialogue. We mourned the passing of Lisa Akers, one of our outstanding members, at a relatively young age. Brief but stirring talks were given by several political candidates (all of whom are club members): Bob Conaway (District Attorney), Jackie Conaway (Congressman), Pat Meagher (Congressman).

The club has now endorsed the above candidates as well as Linda Jones (36th Assembly District). Carmen Hernandez, our club president, has officially begun her campaign for City Council and will be considered for club endorsement at the upcoming meeting.

Kudos to the many volunteers who have done so well in this very successful voter registration effort. It really makes a difference and raises the visibility of the club in the community.

You will hear increasing talk in the media about the need for an ” austerity program” to help reduce the deficit. Of course, what they mean is, austerity for the middle class while the already rich become still richer. This is unnecessary and profoundly unfair and should be resisted. A rollback of lavish tax cuts for the wealthy and corporations should do the job.

Come to the meeting on Saturday, participate in the discussions and help us figure out how to defeat the enemies of the American middle class.
